Cebu Pacific Reaches New Heights in Sustainability with Record ESG Score

CEB shines in 3 key areas: Environmental Excellence, Social Leadership, and Strong Governance

Cebu Pacific, the Philippines' leading carrier, has soared to new heights in its sustainability journey by achieving its highest-ever Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance rating. The airline attained an impressive 46 in the 2024 S&P Global ESG Score, strengthening its position as one of the most sustainable airlines worldwide and reinforcing its commitment to greener air travel.

The S&P Global ESG Score evaluates how companies manage ESG risks, opportunities, and overall impact. Cebu Pacific's latest rating reflects remarkable progress across key sustainability pillars:

  • Environmental Excellence: The airline’s environmental score saw a 17-point leap, rising from 26 to 43. This boost stems from Cebu Pacific’s enhanced environmental policies, strengthened climate strategies, and steady progress in decarbonization efforts. The airline continues to mitigate risks tied to water and energy use, waste disposal, and pollutant discharge.
  • Social Leadership: Cebu Pacific recorded a social score of 51—significantly higher than the airline industry average of 44. This achievement showcases the company’s commitment to fair labor practices, strict adherence to transportation safety regulations, robust passenger data protection, and effective workforce management.
  • Strong Governance: With a two-point increase, the airline’s governance score reached 43, thanks to improvements in risk and crisis management, as well as consistent performance in cybersecurity, information security, ethical practices, and transparent reporting.

“A strong ESG performance isn’t just about hitting numbers; it’s about managing risks and building a more responsible business. Our latest S&P Global ESG score is our best yet. More than just a milestone, it reflects our meaningful progress toward a sustainable future,” said Xander Lao, CEB President and Chief Commercial Officer.

In addition to the S&P Global ESG recognition, Cebu Pacific also received a Gold rating in the 2023 CAPA-Envest Global Airline Sustainability Benchmarking Report. This report, a collaboration between CAPA–Centre for Aviation and the international carbon reduction strategy and investment management company Envest Global, is the aviation industry’s first comprehensive source for benchmarking airlines' environmental efforts as they transition toward net-zero operations. It uses a standardized rating system based on emissions data, helping airlines, investors, and corporate travel managers assess sustainability performance and make informed decisions.

Cebu Pacific’s Gold rating puts into focus its proactive measures in reducing carbon emissions, integrating sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) into its operations, and maintaining transparent sustainability disclosures. The airline stands as the highest-rated for sustainability in the Philippines and is one of only two low-cost carriers in Southeast Asia to achieve this distinction.
