Universal Robina Corporation recently held its annual Sustainability Awards at The Westin Manila on July 17, 2024. This special recognition program celebrates the triumphs of individuals, facilities, and plants in their pursuit of sustainability excellence and their contributions in driving URC toward its ambition of becoming a sustainable global enterprise, specifically in the aspects of Quality, Efficient Resource Management, and Safety, Health, and Well-being.

URC President and CEO Irwin Lee led the company’s sustainability leaders and other colleagues from various business units, including its international subsidiaries, in attending the glittering awards night, the culminating event of the company’s Sustainability Month celebration in July.
Anchored on the theme "Integrate to Elevate: Zero as the Nexus for Sustainable Business", meaning zero defects and food safety incidents, zero accidents, zero emissions, and zero waste, the 2024 Sustainability Awards program brought into focus the production plants that integrate sustainability into every aspect of their operations. Using "zero" as the focal point for sustainable business practices, the event rallied all stakeholders to assume the mantle of safety, health and quality champions and stewards of the environment.
URC Thailand Plant 3 received the LIFE Excellence in Safety Award for its exemplary performance in the area of safety. Siriporn Somchinda (3rd from left) also picked up the award for Best Safety Officer.
Awards were presented in three main categories – LIFE Excellence in Safety, PEARL Excellence in Quality, and GREEN Excellence in Environment – with each having their own subset of Excellence Awards and category recognitions. Dedicated to acknowledging overall excellence in these three categories, the Sustainability Excellence Award is the most coveted and prestigious honor of the annual recognition program.
Vietnam Plant 2 earned the PEARL Excellence in Quality Award, which is given to a plant that has embedded a quality culture resulting in the achievement of exemplary performance for quality and food safety. At the center is Nguyen Thi Anh Ngoc who also won an individual honor as the Best Quality Assurance Head.
This year, there were a total of 47 entries vying for the Sustainability Awards, with the winners receiving trophies, plaques, and corresponding cash prizes. While the entries demonstrated outstanding performance in their respective categories, they fell tantalizingly short of fulfilling the necessary criteria to earn the overall Sustainability Excellence Award, which was last won in 2021.
Vietnam Plant 2 also received the GREEN Excellence in Environment Award, which is given to a facility or plant with high optimization and responsible resource management in terms of energy and water consumption, waste management, and environmental compliance. Deservedly, Gio Huynh Van (center) was named Best Pollution Control Officer.
As URC continues to transform its business, the elusiveness of the Sustainability Excellence Award poses both a challenge and inspiration in the company’s unrelenting pursuit of greater sustainability.
